When I was at my LFS (which historically was pretty good) I inquired about Miracle Mud/Refugiums as this was a new technique since I had my setup before) and the reply was.."Oh, nobody is doing THOSE anymore...I wouldn't do one, they don't really do anything"

    HA

EVERYONE here has one!! (as will I) Planning a 20 gallon fuge/sump....picking at everyone's pics and posts for ideas!!

Perhaps I need to specifically ASK for the Marine guy...

Should start a top 10 list of some of the crazy things LFS say.

I always say the more water volume the better

I started out with a refugium that I made (see my pics and my post in Refugiums) and 2 fish. I have never had a significant amount of ammonia or nitrites through all my sig says I have in my tank. Refugiums are the bomb.

What LFS in Philly said that?

The debate is always "still out" when it comes to miracle mud, but not on fuges. I can see no reason why not to use a fuge, but I can think of several when it comes to "Miracle Mud".

Miracle mud is just hype.. don't use it. Refug are great help with alot of the phosphates in the tank.

I know of one reefer who has a 180 gallon SPS/Clam tank and she raves about her miracle mud ecosytem refugium.  Her success ain't hype, and she's in Texas! ;D

    Hi All!

I had understood miracle mud was a substrate that released trace minerals etc over time....???
But I was interested in refugiums in general to get more info....which I ended up getting here anyways ;D

Can I give the name of the LFS store on line here Gresh?....Its the only BIG one in Philly.....The Hidden Reef.....

and I have to say. like before, they were pretty good with info before, perhaps I was not speaking to the marine/reef guy....

Sometimes I think the debate regarding refugiums is simply a matter or definition. Originally a refugium was considered a place where pods and other life could grow without being eaten or disturbed by the animals in the display tank ( eg a refuge ). Since then people found they could grow Macro Algae in the fug and harvest it to help reduce nitrates etc. Now we have miracle mud and other benthic type products. All good things I guess, and maybe in time we can rename the refugium to something els to help ease the confusion.

    John :)
