Of course online will be cheaper... they don't have nearly the overhead a LFS does. Trust me, if your LFS disappears, you'll be more bummed then stocked about online.

    Support your LFS!!!

Wow...u are right about that...$$$ is just always an issue for me and for LFS i understand. i feel so guilty now:shame:

I think just the initial cost is where Im trying to save right now...I also need/want to get an ro/di system as well. plus Im new to reef keeping, and the last thing I want is for tank to start off on the wrong foot with parasitic creatures. But I will definately be supporting my LFS as well with future purchases. Thanks for the insight and the guilt trip, lol.

How much are you paying for the pukani dry rock? If you don't mind me asking.

$4 a pound for live rock is a great deal, but after doing my 100 gal with half base and half live rock, I realized it really doesn't take long at all to completely cover base rock in coralline algae if you keep your params up. What does his $4/lbs rock look like? If it looks like it will blend in nicely with the pukani rock I would get a few pounds from him in small pieces so you can distribute it among the base rock so the coralline spreads faster.

At $4/lbs it really isn't cheaper online. live rock on liveaquaria is $3.75/lbs plus $1.39/lbs shipping. I only checked one website are there cheaper ones?

    Its $2.99 lb/free shipping.

Yeah it is. the pukani isnt much cheaper I know. I was thinking of getting other types of rock online which was going for $2 -$2.80 or so a lb. But I really like the look and quality of the pukani. So I know Im not going to be saving as much for the "cheaper" rock, but, peace of mind and personal prefernce wins I guess.

Thats what i have been reading. I originally thought i had to go with ALL LR.

Im so new to this I couldn't begin to tell what kind of rock it is. I seen It one time. But that does sound like a good idea. I actually have about 3-5 lbs or LR that I was given by the guy who sold me his tank. The guy had 7 tanks, good coralline growth, so i will probably just use that......unless (i just thought of this) I might just go with the LFS uncured rock to prevent any hitchhikers.

this is very true. Ohter sites which I have considered (found em all on this forum) are Bulkreefsupply.com, MarcoRocks-this is where I was origainally going to buy till I read a few horror stories about the business, but personal choice of course, ebay, reefcleaners.com, just to name a few.
Pro's can chime in on any others or correct me if i am wrong on anything i am saying.

    Origanl question:

would 50lbs of dry pukani rock be sufficient to start my 55 gal tall w/ 20 gal sump? I know I can always add more rock later. I do have some LR rock right now curing (i think) that came from an established reef w/ corraline on it already, which I will be using to seed my tank.

    How much sand is recommended?

    Anyone?
