So I got my CUC from John the other day and there were so many snails even 18hours after adding them to the tank that it drove my wife nuts and I decided to bring a few to a lfs. There was a single large nerite, a ton of dwarf ceriths, a couple florida ceriths, and a couple of reef hermits. (Reefcleaners sent me like 3-4times the amount I ordered!!)

Anyways, I told the guy I had too many and was looking to trade some in, he took the bag looks real carefully and told me he couldnt accept them. HE said he does not sell these types on snails to which I pointed to the tanks behind me labeled dwarf cerith, large cerith, hermit crabs. He told me my snails were coldwater snails and he had learned his lesson with drawf ceriths they just die! Now I understand if he does not want to accept them because he doesnt trust my tank, or jsut because he has the right to refuse but do not try to lie to me and tell me theyre coldwater snails when you have no idea where they came from!

Had to vent, thanks guys! BTW this lfs has specialized in FW for awhile but only within the past year started up SW tanks

Some of the snails will die off John knows this, he always sends a ton. It will balance out based on available food source as the tank ages.

Your LFS has no clue what he is talking about. If it's going to be an issue with your wife, find a local reefing club or craigs list.

I agree 100%. Try and find somebody that can really use them. I always say "What comes around, goes around". Same thing as Karma or pay-it-forward I guess. ;D

How many snails should die off and how long would it take for this to happen? I do not know anybody in the area and was thinking about takign them to a more trusted lfs to jsut give them to the guy. IF there is too much die off will it cause chemistry issues in such a new tank?

    No worries.

It always looks like a mother ship snail exploded with John's orders, it always works out.

You shouldn't have any issues with your water params. Just give it s few more days and see where you are at. You could always post an add on CL, you might be surprised about what kind of response you get.

MaybeI will just give it a few more days, they have dispersed some but instead of being all in one clump they seem to cover every spot of rock and wall. Doing a great job cleaning the algae though rock is turning white again I was shocked how fast they work!
