Hey, it's Saturday. Can't we have a little fun?

    All right, here's the story.

I have recently been through a tank move (OH GOOD LORD, THE AMOUNT OF WORK!!!). I sold some equipment on CL, and decided to do a bit of "upgrading." So, I decided to "upgrade?" a Precision Marine Bullet-1 skimmer with a Precision Marine RL-150. (This says something about my thoughts about PM, doesn't it?). So, I expect to wait a couple of days for it to "lift off..."

4 hours later, we have "lift off." HA!!! Whoever "they" are, claiming a skimmer will need a couple of days to start doing its thing...they are all LIARS.

I guess there are some things to consider. 1) Maybe my tank is just so dirty, that the skimmer has no other option but to start working within hours. 2) Precision Marine products are just that darned good. 3) The universe just likes me today.

I guess we'll never truly know.

I can fully relate to the excitement
congrats on the upgrade and new purchase

if its producing foam for you already
in 3 days time or maybe a little bit later - you are going to be even more pleased
the quality of skimmate will improve, it may get darker/ thicker and smell more strongly

    IMHO

    Steve,

Thanks. More than myself, I hope the critters living above it like it.

I am hoping to, once this one gets good-and-broken-in, run the two PM skimmers side-by-side. Given that both are PM, and rated for the same size tank, we'll see firsthand which produces better. The system is a fishless 70g, so they may both just sit "at idle." I may have to overfeed the corals for a week just to make it fun. I guess the worst thing that could happen is that they'd each get jealous of the other, work that much harder, and proceed to skim all of the corals right out of the tank.

Believe it or not, I am betting the Becket-injected skimmer will produce better. Anyone want to bet a mushroom on it? (If that's illegal, I promise, I didn't propose it.);)

So, why the "upgrade" you ask? I figure I can save $2 a month in electricity running the new one. Shoot, the thing will pay for itself in only...150 months. Oh, crap, I screwed up on the math before I bought it. TOO LATE, I CAN'T TAKE IT BACK NOW!!! Just don't tell my wife about the mathematical error, PLEASE.;D

No skimmers are the same and its really different for everyone. There are trace oils and silicone on the inside of the skimmers that the saltwater requires time to strip off. Some times skimmers have less to none and do not require a break in period. I don’t think anyone lied about skimmer break in periods. It’s more likely that the norm is often times stated where the exception is overlooked, luckily in your case you got the exception.

    Enjoy your new stink maker.

The thing is oils tend to break up the foam, so it dosn't produce as well. Most new skimmers sill have some oils from the manufacturing process. Also, it takes a little time for them to get some gunk buit up on the walls, which helps the foam build and climb. Every skimmer is different. Maybe they cleaned it better than most for example. However, IME, some produce foam at first, and still get more efficient as they break in. So, just because it's producing foam, dosn't mean you won't come home and find it overflowing some day. The recomendation is based on others experiences, it dosn't mean everyone is going to have the same experience, but better to be cautious. If it's an in sump skimmer, overflowing probably isn't really that big a deal. As long as the collection cup isn't full anyways. If it's an external skimmer though, an overflow can be a disaster. So, most people tend to give fairly cautious advise, probably for good reason.

If anyone has taken this post the wrong way, I do apologize. I was merely kidding when I stated "they" were all liars. I was merely giddy about the new skimmer, and wanted to have some fun (please note all of the smilies, and enjoy the sarchasm). Please, don't take me too seriously, and I won't take myself too seriously either.
