I looked at the plastic netting you are talking about it was outside at Lowes with all the stuff to make fences and the chicken wire was with it too.

Model car glue works great on polystyrene egg crate and egg crate cuts easily with a pair of dikes or wire cutters. Cut a small strip to make up the difference, sand the edge smooth and glue it together. I have done this lots of times for both tops and frag racks.

I'm tackling this problem this weekend. Lowes sells black netting only. There is a group buy on RC going with a guy that bought the clear stuff in bulk. Fish netting was another option I looked at, but it was the most expensive solution,

I'm going at it different. I originally was going to just put a acrylic top, but the tank was overheating. So I'm going to drill out the center and leave a 1" rail to hot glue the clear netting onto. I'll post pictures after I'm done.

I found black netting in the garden section at Home Depot. It is called bird netting. But since you have already ordered netting I guess you won't need that. If the acrylic frame does not turn out the way you want, you can buy a window screen frame kit and the tool to roll the rubber strip in. It is really easy to do and has a very finished look to it. I have a pic of mine on page 4(I think) of my tank thread(link in signature).
