Might sound like a dumb question, but barring a tank crashing/ overheating/whatever, what would be the life expectancy of various coral/ inverts?
There's tons of info on care, I don't think I've seen a word on longevity.
    Any thoughts?

In wild, longevity is likely measured in decades instead of years...

Who knows in our artificial, cesspool's we have in our tanks...

My only experience is that have never seem to have a shrimp last more then about 6 years.

Hermits and snails come and go...hard to judge as hermits change "houses" and I can't recognize them anymore...

Snails...some still with me since startup...(trochus/turbo's)...not added any in years.

Large BTA 8 years old...never has split...

    All I can say....:-/

Well, it helped. I was thinking of the time frame for shrimp, I had two peppermints and two skunks 4 months ago, now I just have the skunks...

I know you see reef pictures that show HUGE walls of coral, and of course, only part of it is presently alive, I was questioning whether there would be visible die-off on healthy corals as they mature in a tank, or if entire colonies just tend to colaspe.

Shrimps and causations in general seldom live pass 2 or 3 yrs I did keep a pair of Harlequin for near to 3 yrs , I have and have tangs that are over 10 yrs as for corals ? I have a green stag horn acro I got on a dive in Florida back in the late 80's and I have a Acro colony now that started as a twig in about 92 or so a purple/blue acro many call the monster I got the frag from Tyree early 90's not sure of the yr now . I have several colonies 15 yrs old or more. I have a pink Millipora that is rather old .. I did give some of these to a few friends and sons over the yrs to ensure a restocking resource just in case. But I suspect corals live many yrs in out little glass box's of saltwater.

dont expect shrimp to live more then 4 years. clams and anemones may outlive you. corals should also outlive you but that really depends upon the type of coral.

    Opps see "in tanks"

What you may be seeing is results of some chemical warfare between colonies fighting for space...

    Or else, Predator/Disease...????:-/
