A friend of mine gave this to me brand new in the box. Any exprience with?

I want it primarily for mechanical filtration, Cartridge traps particles from 20 microns down to 5 microns.

Do you think this would accumilate nitrates the way bio balls would?

Buy several extra cartridges so you won't be tempted leave it running without changing/cleaning/re-using them. If you allow them to get dirty and keep running them, it will definitely create Nitrate problems.

Sure. I would plumb it on a bypass with a gate-valve so you can fine tune how much goes through the filter (and also to facilitate replacing the cartridges).
