    which type of lights are they Hank?

    if they are PC lamps, the typically at around 6 months they start to lose power and the colour temp shifts downwards, which can encourage nuisance algae to flourish

    if they are T5 lamps, then 12 months should be OK IME, possibly longer

    Yes change them out. I change out my PCs every 4.5 - 5 months to avoid having them go bad. 6-7 months is there maximum life.
