I've heard metion lately that the light diffuser that is used on the bottom of tanks leaches. Is this fact or fiction? I know there's stuff that is sold specifically for fish tanks. But of course it's alot more $$$. I was planning to put it on the bottom of my 110 before I put in my rocks. Then I was planning on adding sand.

Why do you want a light diffuser?

In that case, I'm sure you can use any regular light diffuser.

But if you do that is leaves a 1/2 of sand that your sand stirrers, snails, fish crabs, starfish cannot touch. Plus the plastic grid isn't very strong and would easily break if a heavy rock was to get tipped over.

If the object is to keep the rocks from sliding use a pvc frame. All my rock work is held together with several PVC frames.

This accomplishes 2 things, keep the rocks in place and keeps them up off the glass. The way my rocks are set up this was the only safe way to do it. As you can see n the pictures I have a wall of rocks that reaches from bottom to top on the right side.

Hey Matt. I've never heard of any issues with eggcrate, to which it's commonly referred. I've not used it on the bottom of my tank, but I have used it plenty in other applications. I've seen it in solid white, and also with a mirror coat of what appears to be paint. I've not used any colored eggcrate, just the white, which has no paint, and is molded in white colored plastic. I've never had any issues, nor have I ever heard of any who have. Lots of folks use it for frag racks, and I've seen it in sumps to hold filtration media.

I don't think you should have any issues.

I've got my tank lined with lowes eggcrate and my"good" lfs uses it for everything so I'm inclined to believe it's not harmful

Many fish stores use egg create (light diffuser) in their frag tanks to hold the coral plugs. I've seen just about every color egg crate under the sun used in tanks (white, black, red, blue, etc) and I've never heard of any problems with it. We're using white egg crate in our frag tanks with no issues and I've personally been using white egg crate as an aquarium lid for years with no issues.

I'm fairly sure it's safe to use :)
