I would just buy a new one. I would be too scared to use that light again.

If you do try to use it again clean it as said then make sure it's dry first. I had a fixture fall in and short out and it didnt' work again....but I didn't bother replacing the balast as it was a cheap fixture anyway.
Good luck....maybe try plugging it in it outside so if something bad happens it isn't in the house.

my ballast makes a HUM noise when you plug it in and doesnt fire up a bulb (put a newbulb in too thinkin the one that went for a swim was dead)

oops. lol. Well I cleaned it out and got all the salt, water, & even a bit of corrosion of of the ballast. I then reassembled tyhe fixture & reinstalled the bulb. Plugged it back in & turned it on. It works now.

if u are using the simpe t8 fixture try getting a new starter they look like a bettery with 2 small posts on the end. they are maybe like .50 at the hardware store.

if it didn't pop and sizzle when he plugged it in it is most likely not going to give him any problems. once all the water is dried off of an electronic there is nothing there that can short any of the circuits. and as long as none of the circuitry was damaged during the incident it will be fine. you can turn your cell phone off throw it in a cup of water and let it dry it will work like nothing happened when u turn it back on(as long as its dry!!)
