Use the eggcrate on the back portion to square off all the HOB items like the overflow and return and cords etc. Then you can make a square'ed off screen. I tried building the screen to fit everything and it was a disaster. This method works and you only use the eggcrate in the back where you really don't need too much light, at least in my case.

Ok, I'm sold. I'll go to my local HD tonight to find out about the price for this project. I don't think it should be more than 30 or 40 bucks.

Any heads up on the material cost and possible replacements if any of them is too high?

Price sound on par. Didn't really keep track of it when I did it, but that's about right.

Hit up Bulk Reef Supply for the clear screen.

I was going to buy from BRS but I ended up using one of those spongy-shower body wash poof ball thingies (apparently I have no clue of it's actual name) but I cut that and it works very well. It's cheaper than BRS mesh but obviously not as strong.

The screen materials for the little set was like 13 bucks and the eggcrate (if you chose to use or don't already have it) is around 10 bucks.

Much cheaper than a canopy! Good luck

Hey guys, there's only one question that comes to mind right now. I was at my local Home depot and found out they only sell aluminum windows frame. It is painted with some very thin paint coat, probably baked on paint or electro-statically painted, but non the less it is a very thin, super thin coat.

My question is, being that the frame is aluminum, wouldn't it corrode after a while?
Do you think that if I spray some krylon on it will work towards making it saltwater resistant?

This is the only thing holding me on this project. I'm really ready to remove the eggcrate.

    Thanks!

    - Mag.

Naw, don't worry about it. Use as is. That's how everyone else does it, myself included. The paint which comes on it is sufficient.

I didn't like the light loss from the egg crate. I turned the crate up on its side and super glued it together to make a "wall" that sits on the lip. I cut out the back in spots for equipment. I then put duct tape (black) on the outside to keep the fishies from being able to jump through the holes. It works well. Has the added benefit of stopping all the light leaking out from over the top.
