Just added 45 lbs of cured LR. Should the lights be on or off? Tank isn't cycled yet.

    Thanks

When live rock comes, if it's good rock it can have all sorts of photosynthetic critters on it. If you are going to leave the lights off during cycle, a guy might as well buy base rock and let it seed. You buy the live rock for all of the life forms that may be present. No light can kill some of these off.

Go ahead leave your lights on. You will love the algae that comes along, especially with nothing in there to eat it.

I have never seen an issue with algae during a cycle as long as the live rock is of good quality. I'm just speaking from my experience. I've been involved in setting up several tanks and this is the way I have done it and it works fine. The key word is (quality rock) If a person can't afford to spend the money on good live rock, then they should just go with base rock and let it get seeded.

I always leave my lights on, never had an issue with algae during cycling or after.

I usually get a few corals with my rock, I have mushrooms, and a few other kinds, all of them came in on my rock.
