I was really excited about starting my new saltwater tank. I am starting to become dismayed though. I found out that I can't use VHO lights on my aquarium because they don't make 30" lights. I order a metal halide retrofit kit from my local specialty fish store, but there is no way it is going to fit in my canopy. The metal reflector is too big and the bulb would be an inch from the glass top and the plastic connector b/t the two pieces of glass. i need lighting suggestions.

    *What kind of lights?
*Do they need to be hung or can they sit on the glass?

    Thanks for the assistance

Welcome kyle and don't hesitate to become a member as there is no cost.

I have four 55 watt PC ballasts in a home made canopy. I only run two 10,000k lights as 220 watts is a little much om my 20 or 29 gallon long.

You can hang the Metal Halide light or build a canopy to accomodate the retrofit.

Welcome Kyle, Like Craig Said Join up it's free and so is the advise.

I would really recommend tossing the glass top for the tank. It traps gases that need to escape aswell as cutting off a good source for air exchange.
It is very difficult to keep the store bought hood went adding lighting. I would really try to stick with your MH that you bought already and build a hood.
I'm no DIY (do it yourself) guy so what I did was slap a few pieces of wood together to get the lights up and the tank going then I spent time building a pretty version
