I have a 50 gallon shallow tank with a Ramora HOB skimmer, a 305 Fluval with Pre-Filter, BioMax, carbon and polishing floss media. I presently don't have an extended marine test kit to test kH or trace element but will soon. I am using the stock Aqueon 18 watt light canopy but changed the lights to 50/50s. I have two large live rocks (about 30 pounds worth together), sand and crushed. I have two Black Clownfish (amphiprion ocellaris), a Neon Goby (gobiosoma oceanops) and two firefish (nemateleotris magnifica) and a red legged hermit crab. I mix Instant Ocean with RO bottled water. My readings for past 5 weeks have been 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 0 nitrate, ph 8.2, SG at 1.024 (32 ppt) temp between 78 and 80 degrees F. I am letting purple and green coraline algae is on the back of the tank. My question is whether I can keep a mushroom coral under these conditions?

If you were here I would need to apologize for chuckling. Yes, you can. Actually – I swear that shrooms will grow in any conditions you throw at them….in my opinion they are the cockroaches of the reef tank !

Everything is good except for lighting.. They are photosynthetic and will need atleast a twin T5 light to keep them.. I used to have this Coralife S/W T-5 Aqualight Double Strip Light-36" - Lighting - T-5 Fixtures at BigalsOnline over my tank and it kept zoas and a mushroom, but then I caught the reef bug and wanted more coral so I upgraded to a T5-HO light like this.. and I can keep pretty much anything..

I keep a couple Rics in my 55 and right now I only have 100w of light coming from a T8 fixture I made. I got the Rics in October and they have tripled in size since. So you will probably need to upgrade your lighting, but don't have to go crazy. Especially if you don't plan on keeping anything more than mushrooms.

Terrific responses. No, mushrooms will be the only type of coral (anemone?) I plan on keeping. It is mostly a FOWLR display tank. I'll try to find a resource online for my lighting. It's difficult find what I want because of the odd ball size (Presently two 20" canopies. I appreciate your help!
