Ok, as you guys all know hood lights are two wire. Why in the world would they not have a ground wire that is grounded to the ballast case(which is metal)? I know for a fact that my light hoods give off stray voltage when they are turned on.

I would assume that I could replace the wire cord with a 2 wire grounded cord. Of course, the ground would go to the ballast case but does anyone know if this will affect the ballast xfmr or not?

Aside from that, the hood is ul listed but not having a ground wire next to a water source is really stupid in my opinion. I guess it is just to save a half a buck on wire.

My lighting retro kit has a ground wire that connects to the ballast case.

Where did you get your lighting, what brand etc?

The tank is a 55 gallon kit from wally world. Inexpensive and no problems with it ever. But, I guess I will have to buy a couple cords and replace these. The ballast case is metal and it must be shedding some of the lowered voltage that is supplied to the fluroescent lights. Easy enough job from jimminy cricket it has a UL sticker and intended for an aquarium?
