If you are just going to keep fish for now you can start off with something simple, even a normal output florescent strip would be enough for fish, though for looks I would go with something a little brighter. If you plan on getting some corals something like a 4 bulb vho retro kit for instance would do just fine for most corals except for many SPS, though there are those that would still be fine.

    I agree with Shawn.
Get something simple now with a color spectrum you like, maybe 50/50s (white/blue) and start a savings for serious lights down the road when you have a handle on the saltwater thing.

    Thanks for joining! :)

can someone give me a specific brand and exactly what to buy for my 75 gallon tank for only saltwater fish. . . i really just need someone to tell me what to go buy. i don't have to get the cheapest lighting, but i can't afford the most expensive. thanks in advance.

Check out the 48" Satellite Hoods here and see what you like.  Any of these would be good for a fsh only as well as soft corals in the future.  Add Metal Halides in the future and you can have LPS, SPS, anemones, and clams.

I would start with half 10,000k and Actinic bulbs  for a good lighting effect.  Darin will take good care of you.

Do you have a canopy for this tank yet? If so go with some kind of retrofit kit.
