My tank's been setup for almost a month, the readings are looking good and I wanted to go out next week and buy my first mushroom or zoa coral. I tried looking on here for info on lighting for a Coral QT tank but I haven't found anything. I know for a QT tank for fish it doesn't require anything special. Help me out here. Also if you guys could give me some insight on your practices in bringing home new coral that would really help give me some ideas. So far I've heard of using Iodine dips and interceptor.

Hi Matt - never used a QT tank for corals

shrooms and Zoas are very hardy so floating the bag (if its not to heavy) to equalise temp and then adding tank water gradually over a period of 30 mins is my preffered method

if rock is to large- I normally transfer to a bucket with the water it came in, and again add tank water by the cup full every 5 mins for about 30 mins - then lift out coral and place it in main tank

shroom and Zoas will contract during the handling and moving phase and as such a few seconds out of water will not harm them

I've also never used a QT tank for corals. For acclimating I just float the bag opened and let water just go into the bag. I live about 5 minutes away from the LFS so I dont need to temp acclimate as much, only the water. I usually let them in after 10-20 minutes depending on the piece. The previous owner at the LFS, which was very helpful, told me that it wasnt necessary to acclimate corals. She was probably talking about the hardier corals and I'm sure a lot of people would disagree with that statement, but I have never had a casualty from not acclimating corals.

But just to be safe, you would want to float it for at least 10 mins longer is suggested.

You will want to replicate your display tank, same lights and try to be as close to the amount of wattage as possible, not sure if it really matters but it can't hurt.

As others have already stated, a QT for coral is a waste of time, resources and money and totally unnecessary. You still can do an Iodine dip if you like just prior to placing in the tank. If I am reading between the lines and you are anxious and want to keep the coral until the tank is fully cycled, your best bet is have LFS hold the coral you want, usually paying 1/2 the price is what they want to hold something.
