I'm new to this hobby and i have a 75 gal. I would like to know what is the right amount of lighting to start a reef? I got a 20 gal long tank for my sump and i'm not sure what to put in it?

    Welcome to 3 REEF!!!

What do you want do you want to grow and how much are you willing to spend? there are a lot of threads on minim lighting.

PC- will grow softies not much penetration

T5- more penetration can grow sps near top half of tank

MH/HQI- can grow all photosynthetic coral

I am not sure where the watts per gallon thread left off but you could brave it

I have 6 pc lights at 65 watts each and still not sure if it's enough lighting.

6 PC 65 watt bulbs should be fine for a beginner reef tank. I wouldnt recommend keeping clams though. They need MH lights to flourish.
