I have a few Lettered olives and one Lighting Whelk (predator snails)in my tank. They have been there for months now. The are suppose to feed on bivalve shells. I dont have any bivalve shells so what are they eating? They are rarely visible they spen all there time buried in the sand with another unidentofied clam. The Lettered olive come up every now and then.

The Lightning Whelk is probably starving, although it might be subsisting on something else. I seem to recall that they've been caught in crab traps baited with fish, so that might indicate that they aren't obligated to feed only on live bivalves. They can live for several months without eating.

Lettered Olives will function mainly as scavengers, eating whatever meaty things they can find. They may also kill their own prey, which can include other snails.

    Cheers,

    Don
