Just curious as to whether simulating lightning would be beneficial? Not on a nightly basis, but like, once a week or so, write a program that would do random flashes for an hour or so to simulate a thunder storm.

Would that have any benefit whatsoever?

It's possible that you have some species of coral in your tank would would be stimulated into releasing spores. The is an even slighter chance that any of those spores would stay around long enough, without being eaten or picked up by filtration, to become coral. I would say no there is no benefit, but I would like to see video of that show. Make sure you do very dim flashes to simulate what lightning would look like from 10+ feet under water, or all you will do is scare your fish right out of the water.

If I had the skill to set my lights up to do it automatically, I would have it go about once a month just because it would be a neat show.

Also, from what I've read, lightning is an uncommon occurrence at sea. The sea just doesn't play into the science of lightning well.

Lightning is caused by a system that works like a GIANT capacitor. A great difference in charge develops between the sky and the ground. At a certain point, the insulating material between (oxygen in this case) becomes conductive, and a massive amount of electrons transfer from one surface to another.

My explanation might not be perfectly scientific (I can't remember a lot of the terms, it's been a while), but I hope it is sufficient.

I really doubt it would be anything more than cosmetic/cool for you and your guests to see once in a while. Also depending on your lighting it could reduce the lifespan of your bulbs, metal halide and T5 lighting is not designed for rapid starting/stopping.

Hmm, white led moonlights maybe. I think they would be about the right intensity. I want to see this done, and then have you come hook it up for my tank too.

I have spent many years at sea and lightning is NOT an uncommon occurrence,as far as simulating it being beneficial I would have to guess no.
But I bet it would look really neat!
