respectfully disagree. A healthy Tang will eat like a pig, it will grow very fast, in a month & a half mine was double its size. Aggression will ramp up as it becomes cramped in a small space. Have you ever tried to catch a Tang out of an established reef tank, it's not a fun thing.

You can google "My Tang has white spots" and come up with hundreds of uneducated SW keepers that are stressing these fish out by putting them in tanks that can't support them. There is a reason that respected and established sites like liveaquaria (list minimum tank size 125g) & numerous SW keepers recommend large systems for Tangs, as to not have a headache down the line.

Why house a fish in your tank that will outgrow it, unless you are planning an upgrade, simple as that.

I'm done hijacking this thread, best of luck.

MoJoe, I totally agree with you... but ya can't go by info on liveaquaria or any other fish selling site. They are typically very wrong with their care descriptions. I have no idea why they don't clean that info up!

My friend's hippo just outgrew his 180g after 3 years. The fatty couldn't take the corners like he once could and you could see his swimming pattern was different from when he was smaller. But OMG when he went into a larger tank he was doing cartwheels of joy. Okay, not really.... but he stopped pacing. I agree an adult won't fit in a 55... at all.... but you could always just change him every time he gets a little size on him. Some stores even allow you to grow them up some and bring them back for another smaller one. The bigger ones are more money for them so they don't mind if they grow up on your dime. Maybe see if someone will do it in your area.

I know that wasn't the question...... but we are trying to share our experiences when we see something that may not turn out well.

That is a good point. sites like Liveaquaria are trying to sell fish so they are willing to list the absolute minimum tank size. This should tell you that if you have yours in a smaller tank than what Liveaquaria lists, your tank is WAY too small. i have a dejardini in a 135 and i regret buying him. i think he will get too big for this tank even thought they list the min size at 125.
