Hey all - I am starting to put together a "wish list" for my tank

I plan on doing some Soft Corals & SPS and for the most part reef safe fish. I have seen a few tanks that are reef tanks and also have a lion fish in them

I really want to do a lion fish in my tank. does anyone have them mixed in? if so what other fish do you have them with.

Ideally I would like to stock my tank with

    Pink Tail Trigger
    Maroon Clown
    Sailfin Tang
    Lion Fish
Maybe a Mandarin down the road?

    Thoughts - ideas?

I know with the lion Fish - shrimp and such are out - are there any types more "reef safe"?

    Hi Reefbuilder,

I do not think the Trigger will work in your tank. Tank is toooooo small and this is an aggressive fish.

    Pinktail Triggerfish

Most of the larger varieties will get too large, what type of Lion Fish were you looking at specifically?

I am very open to suggestions. my LPS said that the Pink tail would work - I will look into it some more.

I would take the lion over that.

    Lionfish

Get one of the smaller varieties. The Volitan Lionfish got too big for my 100 gallon and quick, I also worried the fish would inhale my smaller fish/clowns.

"my LPS said that the Pink tail would work"
Famous last words. You're doing the right thing by asking here rather than relying on the LFS, they want your monezzzz.

Customer: Well I like the Pink tailed trigger.
LFS: Great, want me to bag it up?
Customer: Will it get too big for my 100 gallon tank?
LFS: Nahhh, it'll be fine in 100 gallon for a couple of years.
    Customer: Are they aggressive?
LFS: No not really ours has been fine with the other fish, they do not get aggressive until they're fully mature and by that time you'll up grade to a bigger tank. ::)

Hopefully Greg will be along to provide in depth assistance, you can also go to http://www.lionfishlair.com/.

I agree with Coraline, and would like to also caution you about the maroon clown, they can be aggressive to. If you get the goby make sure you see him eat before you get him, they can be very picky if they are not eating prepared foods. What size tank are you thinking about? If your going really big you may be able to have the selection your thinking about.

Thanks. Good feedback. 100 gallon. I would pass on the trigger to have a lion fish. I will look at varieties. Maybe the dwarf?

I kept the Dendrochirus zebra in a species only tank, mine was basically a percher, swim, perch and repeat. Spent many a days trying to get it to eat initially, used a feeding stick.
He was a hardy fish for me but I just was not into his specialized feeding requirements.

If I were to get another is would be Radiata Lionfish just because they are more active swimmers.

Defer all suggestions regarding suggestion as to type to Greg though.

VERY COOL! I think I just need to slow down do some more reading and develop a plan. Obviously I want a healthy environment for them.

I have a 70 Gallon tank I was going to put in my office as phase two - I just spend more time upstairs where the main tank is and have always loved how the Lion Fish looks.
