+1 they will leave your crabs and snails alone if well fed. Also won't bother your corals. Just be very careful especially with such a small tank when you have to reach in. Definitely a good idea to stay with the corals and maybe a small cheep damsel while you wait for the lion...

Lions will never eat hermits or snails, not even if starving. The shells are simply not edible and they cannot slurp one out of the shell if flipped over. If a hermit was walking around in the open without it's shell, then it would be game ON! But you have other issues if your hermits are out in the open without shells. They will eat ornamental shrimp and crabs.

They are compatible with all corals. Some have said they can go blind when in high light, but I've never had or seen that happen. I think it's a nutritional issue, not a lighting issue. They can be a heavy bioload and when coupled with bright lights, nuisance algae can be a problem.

Some of the links in my siggy might be a good starting point :)

Thanks Renee..tank is setup and ready for new home to lionfish. however we are very particular about getting Red volitian lionfish or similiar but only in red color. all my lFS here have them in maroon or closer to black but not red. can you suggest where I can buy red one, i don't want dwarfs.

Your tank is no where near big enough for a Volitan. Also the fact that its a hex makes it even worse as there is even less horizontal swimming room with this shape.

    *party pooper enters the room*

A 55g tank, especially a 55g hex tank, is not appropriate for the larger variety lion such as the volitans and russels.
