Sheriff defends order to shoot bears, tigers - US news - Crime & courts - msnbc.com

I can't post the video on msn's homepage, but check it out. This is 4 miles from my house, and we have tigers, mountain lions,a grizzly bear, black bears, leopards, cougars and several others running amuck. Most are being shot on site for the publics saftey. My sons school is closed along with a few other local schools and it's a pretty intense yet scary situation.Jack Hanna is on the scene along with other carnivorous animal pros trying to get a handle on this.Glad we got enough chow and tp for the next couple days...

SUPER SAD! Whats annoying about this is they are not telling us what the person that owned these animals died from. They are just saying that he was found dead.

To me it's crazy that they wouldn't take the extra time to gather up some tranq guns and save at least some of the animals.

They did tranq a couple tigers which they either ran off or turned on the shooters forcing them to put them down, the rest was for saftey concerns as this a populated area.I don't like seeing this very much myself, but if it's my families safety vs a wild predator(s) on the loose,i don't have that big of a problem with it.

They did just update that all but 3 have been killed.A mountain lion,a grizzly bear and some kind of monkey are still at large.Jack Hanna will be taking the remaining animals (there were many that was either house pets or still in thier cage and not released) to the Columbus zoo to provide housing.

What a sad sad day for these majestic exotic animals. This is the owners fault for putting these creatures in this horrible position.I hold no grudge with the law enforcement, they did thier job to protect the people.Sadly though,it doesn't make it suck any less.

Here is the latest update with some more accurate numbers, the number of animals shot is unreal. And now they're saying the one remaining monkey on the loose possibly has herpies-b........lovely.

ZANESVILLE, Ohio - Forty-nine of 56 escaped exotic animals had been shot and killed on Wednesday, Sheriff Matt Lutz said.
The sheriff's office announced on Wednesday afternoon that the body of a wolf had been recovered and now only a monkey remains on the loose.

The director of the Columbus Zoo as well as The Wilds recommended that the escaped monkey be shot and killed on sight because it could possibly carry Herpes B, the sheriff said.
Of the 48 animals that were shot and killed, there were two wolves, six black bears, nine male lions, eight lionesses, one baboon, three mountain lions, and 18 tigers.

“It’s a tragedy for the animal world,” said Columbus Zoo director emeritus Jack Hanna. “It could’ve been a bigger tragedy for the human world, that’s what we tried to avoid here last night.”

According to the sheriff said six animals were transported to the Columbus Zoo.

Earlier, Muskingum County Sheriff Matt Lutz said that a grizzly bear and a mountain lion were on the loose. He later announced that the animals were shot and killed on Tuesday night.

Lutz said that the owner of the preserve, Terry Thompson, released the animals from the Kopchak Road property before he took his own life.

Lutz said that his deputies were not armed with tranquilizers and ordered them to shoot the animals - some at close range - because they posed a threat to the community.

"If the animals looked like they were going (out of the property), I told (deputies), 'Put them down,'" Lutz said.

Hanna drove overnight from Pennsylvania in hopes of saving the animals but defended Lutz's orders.

"The sheriff did the right thing," Hanna said.

The preserve had lions, tigers, cheetahs, wolves, giraffes, camels and bears. Authorities said that bears and wolves were among the escaped animals that were killed and there were multiple sightings of exotic animals along nearby Interstate 70. One of the animals was struck and killed by a passing vehicle along the interstate, Lutz said.

"These are wild animals that you would see on TV, in Africa," Lutz said on Tuesday night.

I was just about to post this. I thought I remembered someone on 3reef lived near Zanesville. This is pretty weird occurrence. What I'm wondering is why the guy killed himself?

Glad to hear everything is under control (for the most part). Stay safe.
