Liquid Nail

Does anyone see a problem with using Liquid Nail to cement dead base rock togeother to build a base for my reef. I have about 90 lbs. of dead dry base rock that I would like to attach togeother to form the reef base, and save money from buying LR.

 

Yes it is likely to leach toxins into the water over time.

I have heard of using 2 part epoxy.

What also works well is drilling the rock and either zap strapping it together or gluing small acrylic rods to hold it together

Yes, it will definitely leak toxins and it's not made for under water use at all. Try CorAffix made especially for this. you'd just have to buy quite a bit.

Last fancy wall I was asked to build I used simple old cement/mortar Just usea agranoite sand to mixit. or not I prefere the better sand , Then Just work like a mason uses to set bricks ..Just allow it to cure up while cycling the tank.. takes about 6 weeks . I have also used fibeglass resin.. the two part stuff that is applied over the matting for different repairs .

 

fiberglass resin you can buy at home depot or lowes? used for I guess, mainly boat repair?

Nope it Its totaly safe ever been to a public aquarium ? Those are not real rock wall just fiberglass . It was many time when we used to build wooden tanks..We'd line the inside with the fiberglass to water proof the wood .

 

Thorite is what I prefer. It has a 6hr cure time and its reef safe when cured. Thats what reef rebuilders use.

 

You ahould allow for a total cure time when useing fiberglass.

If you ever thought of this and NO cure/wait time , try taking the rock and drilling it with a hole ,(depending on how large the rock) insert a piece of PVC/tubing say half inch ?
drill the corasponding one (sitting atop it , drill it on the bottom ) .
Ive actually seen where a person actually stacked LR one atop the other like 6/7 pices , he juse chose a solid base rock and drilled thrue it , stuck the half inch pipe in then continued to drill right thrue each rock (stacking one atop the other ) atop the other
till he reached his desired height.

 

Hey tangster, whats that stuff that can be bought at home depot and is an epoxy stick. Is it Oakley? Was gonna get some but wasnt sure. The case looks really similar to that as an aquastik.......

 

There are two types I have posted about the one you want will say for plastic Pipe ABS PVC and CPVC or words to that effect The other will mention Iron and steel thats not the one.. I know many doubt that anything could be used unless its inflated 1000% and says fish on it some where .. But thats what I use to epoxy my plug with. 4.99 or so opposed to 15.99 for the fish stuff.. But it's totally safe
