    I reuse substrate all the time. However, it always gets a really good rinsing in a bucket until the rinse water runs clear. If you want to try and keep the sand more on the "live" side, you can rinse it with used tankwater, but you'll need a lot of water to get it clean.

    Once disturbed, you'll need to rinse it or toss it, but I wouldn't use it "as-is".
