Yup they are gas bubbles, i forgot what kind but its a part of the aquarium cycle, i have them as well in my set up, they are nothing to worry about, and they will come and go as they please. every now and then they will pop out of the sand and a few days later more will be back

cool glad to hear its nothing to worry about.

here is another area with some trails of some activity.

would this not have happened if I was above the 4 inch deep sand bed measure?

They will happen pretty much on any depth bed, the trails your seeing could be from bubbles, but they could also be from copepods, bristleworms etc..

cool thanks guys, so i've got bubbles in sand **leave them alone** they are natural part of cycle and mean my sand bed is working correctly. Disturbing the bubbles for esthetic cleaning will only spike the system and cause problems. The trails are a good sign of copepods so hopefully they are breeding and that will increase. happy camper now

All signs of a good tank. Keep up the good work. Here's some food for thought......

Imagine out in the ocean, a gas bubble so big, it offsets the buoyancy of an entire ship so much that it sinks. That's a lot of friggin anaerobic bacteria at work there. All thanks to that tiny nitrate that just had to turn into gas. Talk about a stroke of luck to be boating along in the ocean at the exact time that giant bubble decided to pop out of the sand.....
