If you have no hard coral, 3 days of darkness will kill all hair algae, and cyano. If that is not an option, increase water flow and do more partial water changes sucking up as much of the cyano as you can. A sea hare will devastate hair algae and cyano but, will most likely starve to death in the end. If you belong to a local fish club they may have 1 you could borrow.

Alright so I bought some ceriths, nerites, and nassarius from reefcleaners and I blight a 750 gph Powerhead. I'm almost done building my sump and I have a Hob fuge right now. The cyano hasn't gotten worse, but not better. This was the first day so it shouldn't be too bad. I have increased my pwc also. Can't really suck out the cyano though, I usually just pick it up after I'm done.

I had a bad cyno and GHA issue (still have a little gha). Here are the steps I did, and something got rid of it.

    1. Switched to RODI water (which I see you're already using)
    2. Changed bulbs so everything was new
    3. Beefed up my CuC
    4. Started every other or every 3rd day water changes for about a month
    5. Drastically reduced feeding (every other day at most)
    6. Started adding Special Blend (was skeptical about it, but a few 3reef members had great luck with it and I was desperate)
    7. 48 hours lights out - NOTE: I did this twice. If you do it and you're tank isn't really ready to be rid of cyno, it will come RIGHT back (as mine did after my first lights out attempt). My second time doing this I had done a ton of water changes, and started doing the special blend. It hasn't come back since!

It can be frustrating, so good luck, but just keep with it and you should beat it. Especially if you're using RODI already.

Also, I was told to syphon it up as well. I decided to ignore this advice after I'd tried a few times. Ultimately I was just stirring my sand bed, and I feel like I was releasing enough nasties that it was doing more harm than good.

Alright, well I did most of that but I'm still doing once a week pwc at 10%. And What's special blend? Thanks for all the info everyone.

Turning off your lights will do nothing to help with cyano. It's a bacteria, not an algae and can fully thrive in darkness.

Is your tank located near any windows? How much flow is in your tank? What and how much are you feeding? What type and age are your bulbs?

It is also an algae I thought, kind of in between? Wouldn't that mean that it would slow growth? Either way it's not possible because I have sps.

My tank isnt near a window. I used to have about 700 gph in my tank but as of today I have 1450 gph. I've been feeding every other day with mysis that's been filtered and occasionally omega flake food. I have 2 14000k white bulbs and 2 actinics. They are less than 3 months old.
