Im planning on upgrading my sump from a 10g to a 20g. In turn, I have to to increase my live rock another 10lbs. Would it be totally out of the question to use bio balls in place of the additional rocks and save myself about $40? Not sure what the ramifications of mixing my existing live rock and bio balls would be.

It won't but you might have a problem with nitrates. You might want to look up dry base rock it tends to be 2$ per lbs so fairly cheap and you won't have to worry about all the hassle w/ the bio balls. Plus more rock = more aquascaping = more eye catchy.
