Hello Captain, first......there is no formula for the correct amount of rock, no scientific one that is. Someone made up the one referred to in this thread. You will hear/read 2 lbs., 1.5 lbs. as high as 3 lbs and as low as 1 lb. These are all subjective numbers and should only be used as a guide. Example; take the low end of the scale, with no fish and coral and inverts only, that would be fine. With a lot of fish and coral and inverts the upper limit would be more in line as the guide. Aesthetics play a role and as long as there is enough rock/substrate to handle the load you customize the aqua scape as you desire. If a sump and/or refugium is employed less rock can be used effectively in the display for more aesthetic purposes.
O.k. off of that. Do you have T5 or better lighting on the new tank? I didn't read it anywhere, maybe I missed it. The tank is looking good by the way. If you have a sump, you may like the way the tank looks and keep it that way as to avoid going through another cycle after adding more rock. Happy reefing to you!

Cool, that confirms what I thought, base rock = no cycle :)

Thanks ! Yeah I think my LFS has Florida rock (being in Florida and all ...) which I read is not really porous

lol, yeah I'm planning on fish and coral
    light is 6 x 39W (234w) T5, 3 of them 10,000K (117W) and 3 of them are actinic (117W)
    oh and no sump :-/
