I have a magnum 350 canister filter by marine land. Would it be ok to beat up a piece of live rock and put the pieces inside the little basket? Or surround the basket? And completely get rid of the carbon? Still pretty new at this so dont laugh at all the silly ?'s!!! Thanks for the help!

I wouldn't recommend it as the LR rubble will just become a detritus trap, turning your canister into a nitrate factory. Also, carbon removes organic and inorganic compounds that your LR cannot digest.

Wow ~ I had every intention of doing the same for my 150. Read a lot about LR in canisters & it was better. Amazing how many different ways & different thoughts you get in every direction. ;) All good tho!

I use live rock in my hob sump, but I still use carbon and chemi pure, as long as you have something to remove the chemical compounds, and detritus (i.e carbon and filter floss) it should be ok, but I would monitor your levels closely, cause technically the live rock in your tank is already the main biological filtration. so realistically you really only need chemical and mechanical.

Not sure anything would survive the amount of flow that goes through the basket. That coupled with lack of light can't see what good it would do.

Live rock sealed in a can mister is called rubble. Use a ceramic media if this is your intent.
