live rock question

I have a bunch of lace rock in my tank. Im going to purchase live rock i have a 110 g tall lighting is coarlife 2blue 2 white 65 wats. Is it nesisary to cury live rock what pourpous does this have and what kind of live rock should i get should i buy online or from a lfs. I want to get my tank looking more colerfull with corline algee or watevr

 

curing live rock is basically getting it used to living in a smaller amount of water, aquarium vs ocean

the fish store usually cures it before sale.most of the good stuff comes in on the rocks with coral on them.those rocks are uncured.the only reason to cure rock is to get rid of half dead stuff on it.if its shipped fast enough or with water then its better off not cured.

 

lets say i get uncured rock will i get bad things like mantis shrimp bad worms and stuff

You take that chance if it's cured or uncured. There are some inverts that can live a long time in the rock while everything else on the surface will die off. Crabs are one them

The Con to buying live rock is not knowing if there is any bad hitch hikers on, or in it. Plus it is more expensive :-/

The Con to buying base or dead rock is only having to wait while the coraline algae that you like takes time to grow. But, with good water parameters it should not take long for that to happen.

Cured rock is basically rock that has been placed in a tank for a period to allow DIE OFF from place of origin or transit, to run its course, as well as the cycing that becomes evident with this curing process.
Uncured rock is rock that has just arrived from origin or place of transit, and is associated with dead organisms that died along the way and haven't had the time to fall off, decay or be removed yet!

 

so should i gete cured or non cured wha have u guys got

 

tampa bay live rock is shipped in water and has no die off but its expensive shipping cause of water weight in the bucket.if you buy liverock shipped in newspaper like most you will have die off like coral reefer said but if its a new tank with no fish or corals in it theres no reason why you can't put uncured live rock in it with a reef grade light over it.you will get much more live stuff and maybe even some corals will show up.my tank was up and running with fish in it when i got my rock so i had to get cured rock.

 

I got some Fiji ultra premium live rock shipped to an airport close to my home and went and picked it up myself. Thus saving me some time and money and getting it alot faster. I picked it up on a Thursday then cleaned it up with rock prep and placed it in my tank that had been up and running for about 5-6 weeks with just live sand in it. After about 4 or 5 water changes of about 30-35% and 2 weeks all my nitrate levels went down to 5-10 and that let me start placing in cleaners like snails and hermits. Then a week or 2 later and about 3-5 water changes later I added some peppermint shrimp and emerald crabs. After a week with nitrates at 0-5ppm I added my first coral. My live rock also came with a hard coral frag that I have in the tank. The one i bought is a SPS.

I keep doing water changes from the start until all ammonia, and nitrate, and nitrite levels were either 0 or close to it before adding things like shrimp. I still have not added any fish just because I have not decided on which clowns I will go with. It really does not matter what rock you get or how you get it if there is nothing in the tank yet. just be prepared to do water changes although their is nothing that is visibly living in the tank yet. I went through alot of salt mix just changing water every other day for 2 weeks alone. All of my rock is now growing or starting to grow coralline algae in spaces. Along with my sump also. Normally most people cycle their tank then place in their live rock and go through a 2nd cycle. And let the 2nd cycle go until hazardous things are very low or at 0ppm.

If you would like a reference to get live rock I would be more than happy to let you know where I bought mine at. Just wait until you go through the brown algae stage lol.
