i heard your suppose to minimize the area because detritus will build up near the rocks. ive also heard that it creates a anerobic zone on the rock, but i dont really care about it. i would just minimize contact to prevent detritus dead zones.

Live rock can touch sand. There is nothing wrong with that. However the more live rock is under the sand the less surface area of the rock is exposed to the water.

yes this is true. however, a lot of other occurances happen in the oceans that cannot happen in captivity. one example is in the wild tangs live in huge schools completly peacful and docile to each one in the group. yet place them in an aquarium setting they instantly become agreesive and territorial. ocean animals and the complex ecosystem they live in is very hard to replicate in a small glass case. it will take quite a few generations of captive bred species in order to be able to 'cheat' or 'cut corners'.

How high would the liverock have to be up for good flow underneath it..??
    1 inch.? 2 inches.?
All kidding aside.. One day I had to pick up a Large piece of LR ..
And couldn't belive all the detritus, etc under it.. But IMHO I feel it may even have a place in a tank.. We do have things living in our sand.. Right.? All dead stuff will break down.. And create food for good stuff.. And maybe for some things not so good..
The bottom of my tank gets moved around so much, I could never have a 1/4"
between bottom and LR, and keep it from filling in..

Guys, I'm typing off my iPhone, so I'm trying to keep it short, didn't mean for the statement to come off so overstated.
