I've heard about this before and was thinking about incorporating it into my setup...

(it's hard to explain) It's basically a tube with slits in the bottom, where water from your OF comes into it filled with LR rubble...i also heard that you have to leave some LR exposed to air?

Is this practical? What are it's benefits?

also, the water from my OF flows into the sump, then through baffles into the actual sump area..could i just fill that first chamber with some rubble?

Sounds like someone took a bioball tower and decided to make it 10 times more expensive.

    Just do it with bioballs.

You'll still get the same result.....

    Increased dissolved Oxygen
Increased off-gassing of Carbon Dioxide (which helps raise the pH)
    Increased Nitrification

Just make sure it is pre-filtered with mechanical media and that media is cleaned on a regular basis

It's basically a wet-dry with media that is expensive vs media that is inexpensive

I cannot for the life of me see the use for it. Putting some rubble into your first chamber would do well and you could emulate the tower idea if you ran the water input so it had to travel back up to go through the rocks to get to the baffle. Sorry about the run on sentence.
