I use dr. Tims on all my tanks to cycle it.ready after the water clears.but a shrimp will definitely work, just slower.

i always just put a shrimp in and let the tank do what it has to do. IMO all these "cycle your tank in a day" additives are garbage. plus for someone new, the cycle will give you a good look on how being patient with the tank is the best thing you can do for it.

+1 just let it cycle naturally. I would never use any of those cheesey additives

Dr. Tim's isn't an instant cycle if you do the fishless method. I used it on my 10g and it still took 11 days. I used all dry rock and sand. It's quicker but you still get a chance to learn a few things about testing your water and such. I however did still wait to have zeros for a week solid before putting anything in it, about the end of week 3.

Yeah you guys are right, I not going to add the instant cycle things. I still need my diner shrimp to throw in the tank for a while. While it's in there what should I do besides test the water? Should I be doing pwc's too?

Some people will say do pwc's but u don't need to. Just test the water and leave the tank alone to do its thing. Once its cycled u can start doing small water changes to get the nitrates down.

If you have true live rock and notice a lot of die-off, you can vacuum that out and replace what you removed with fresh sw. Otherwise, just keep it topped off with fresh ro/di and let it cycle.
