Hi everyone. I did a quick search for a thread on this but I didn't find one that answered my question. I am new to saltwater and I have already posted other questions as I am starting a new build but I am full of questions and need advice.

I know that there are different types of live rock. I.e. figi, Caribbean, etc. my question is, of all these different types of live rock is one better than the other. Is there a best type to use as far as having more or better micro-organisms. I am starting aFOWLR 75 gallon and would like help. Oh, also how much is the right amount to get. I've read that 1.5 - 2lbs or lv is recommended. Does it matter?

Where its from just dictates the structure of the rock. not really the bacteria on them. if they were taken from the ocean in those regions, then the exact bio diversity would probably be a little different as not all organisms live in the same place. But the "best" rock is one that has lots of places for little organsims to get in and live. its just what suits your style

It does matter, the more the better. theres not an exact answer imo. I would rather have too much than not enough.

That is just a personal taste. Which do you think looks better?

Honestly, I would never buy live rock. Do the system in dry base, and borrow or get some rubble from an established tank. All those different hitch hikers might sound like fun, till one completely takes over and ruins your system!

Does dry base rock take longer to colonize and establish a healthy bacteria base? I don't really know anyone with a SW tank that I can get hitch hikers from. Are ther products in the market that can aid in establishing bacteria? Or is it just better to find someone with a SW tank? What about a local fs that may have live rock in a holding tank, would that be good?

    Thanks
    Ed

PackLeader, I did some more research on your recommendation to use base rock. I found that your right about unwanted hitch hikers that can ruin my setup. I found this website bulk reef supply that sell some pretty interesting looking base rock. Have you ever heard of BRS "Reef Saver" Eco Dry Aquarium Live Rock? According to their description it's calcium based. Would this be good to start up the tank with?

I got the reef saver from BRS a couple of weeks ago and it was sweet! Ordered 30 lbs and actually got 35. Quick shipping, too! You could set the aquascape up and fill with water and then add Dr Tim's "One and Only" with a couple fish to start the cycle. Dr Tim's is a 3reef sponsor and you can pull up his info from the sponsor section or google it.

I like my Vanuatu. Great shapes, very porous and light.

I wouldn't recommend starting a cycle with fish.
