I use some airline tube with a long peace of the hard plastic tube so I do not have to put my hand down in to the tank.

I use a turkey baster, snails, and hermit crabs.

Just use it to lightly stir the very top layer of sand with a water stream. Don't "dig" any big holes and don't suction any sand out with the turkey baster.

I tried a turkey baster and all it did was scatter the poop and detrius all over.

If you have filter media and a skimmer they will remove the suspended detritus pearticles from the water column.

I have a hard tube that will go to the bottom of my tank, and when I do a water change I will work the tube around the rocks and stuff to get as much as I can. It is a slow process but it works for me.
