How old is your tank? As a general concensus it is not recommended to add one to a new tank as there is not enough materials in the substrate for it to feed upon. Most recommend around a year. I added mine at about the 5 months mark, but I am notorious for over feeding and it has been doing fine.

As far as concerns over CC substrate I think it would be ok, it doesnt have the soft underbelly of a say a goby or other fish for it to scratch & cause infections.

i believe he is asking about sand sifting fish in general not a starfish. How large are the cc grains? i know some of the gobies don't like the larger grains.

Sometimes some grain is good, as it helps build burrows. However too much can hurt them, so there is a fine line. Also, some sand-sifting fish, do require an established tank, as well, as they have high metabolism and do not readily eat prepared foods. So, you will probably want to be more specific regarding you livestock preferences.

tank is new, and the CC is agronite caribbean puka shells. i dont plan on putting any in now i just wasnt sure if i should try and get it out now if it will be bad later on. orig i put in 10lbs of CC and i scooped alot of it out and caused my tank to cloud up for 3 days but there it still more that i could not get out.

EDIT: just thought about it and im not sure i should be calling the puka shells CC, so please correct me if they are not the same im still new to the hobby and assumed this is what everyone was talking about.

That doesn't look bad. My experience with sleeper gobies is that they would simply move the larger chunks out of their way. As other have pointed out, burrowers will use them to line their holes.

Had you mixed the 10lbs of CC with 10lbs of sand, it might have been an issue.
