I dont think id ever put lava rock in an of my tanks. Might be easyier(and cheaper) to buy high desert play sand which is white and 3 bucks a bag for 50 pounds from home depot and get a cup of live sand from a local reefer. I have always used this sand and its an awsome white and SUPER cheap and reef safe.

I just ordered some of that yesterday. should be here by monday, hopefully saturday. I will post after I get it. I have two lava rocks as the base to my reef setup. haven't had any problems.

are you sure that the "desert play sand" work well? how long have you used them for? i have about 40 lbs of live sand on my 30 gallon tank which i will be tearing down for my 80 gallon. maybe i can use the 40 lb to seed these home depot sand. can you show me some pics of it? thanks

well i have about 60 lbs of live rock already im just going to get maybe some dry rocks. but please do update me on your orders. pros and cons if possible.

    THANKS

Shortcuts wont get you too far and will only bring you heartache along with handfuls of hair and a bald head.
Check out your diff LFS for dry sand and compare prices.
Just my opinion, but I wouldn't trust sand meant for playing in my tank. It may be the same stuff, or it may be treated with chemicals that are potentially harmful to fish and corals, who knows.

no hard and fast rules, just opinions in many cases

    My opinion is
If I get it from the LFS or some other aquatic site on the net etc - then I can assume its safe for my tank

I would buy dry sand from the LFS and maybe seed it with some live sand from another tank - it will become colonised with bacteria eventually either way.

    but thats just my opinion

Not a short cut, been using the high desert play sand for years along with the kolorscape with no problems at all. I currently have a 180 packed full of corals with three backs of this sand
