I am setting up a new tank and want to know if it is ok to put half aragonite sand down and the other half live sand? If so, is 3" sufficient?

Where is a good place to get quality live sand other than the local fish store?

    Thanks for the help.

That would be fine to do. There are all sorts of websites that carry it, but I'll have to bump for specific names.

I've heard of aragonite play sand works. I wouldn't see a problem with adding live sand to non-live sand (for lack of a better term). It will seed it. In my tank i have a mere 1" of sand and like it because i feel like i'm avoiding the impending doom of a deep sand bed :p

What exactly is the impending doom of a deep sand bed? Is it a bad idea to have a sand bed 3" deep? I thought you need it to be deep to create an anoxic zone for denitrifying bacteria?

Will this method create a lot of detritus?? I don't want to run into big problems.

    Any info will be great!
