i have just recently set up a 55g tank and have about a 5 gallon bucket full i would say of left over and i was wondering if i could just save it for a later use and what not. i am not to worried if the" alive" sand dies off cause i was planning on using the left over to replace what gets cleaned out. thanks for the help

if not going to use for a while I would dry it off and let sit for a few months. after dryed off for a while rinse out then you just have dead sand. but make sure you won't need it for a while otherwise you will add a ton of dead stuff to your tank if you decide to use it later.

It really depends on what type of live sand you have. If it is the bagged live sand, there is no real life in it so saving it is not a problem. If it is real live sand with live critters in it, they will die off, so you will have to clean the sand before you use it and it might smell a little as the critters decompose.
