it looks like i walked into a fish store and said

GIMMIE ALL YOUR PRODUCTS AND NOBODY GETS HURT! :uzi:

lol I don't see an expiration date on the bottles buy they do say keeping them in a cool place will prolong shelf life. So there has to be. Good news is most of them are even still sealed

So I tested water before/after my last water change, and everything seems to be pretty stable and in the right place except the alk is still low - 6dkh.

    Other levels are:

    Ammonia 0
    Nitrates 0
pH 7.8 - 8.0 (getting real tired of the API kit for this lol)
    mag 1440
    calcium 440
    salinity 1.025
    temp 79

I'm using Tropic Marin salt and not dosing anything. All other levels seem alright to me. I did test the new saltwater before a WC and it was only ~5dkh. So I guess it's just because of the salt I'm using? Which sucks because it seems to be a good source for calc and mag

I have a bottle of KH buffer I think I'm going to start using it and see what happens. I'll post results as they come.

As long as your water params are stable, you are fine. I wouldn't change up your salt if you are happy with it. If you dose to bring up your ALK, do it slowly.

Thanks - I was wondering what, if any, the negative effects of alk that low are. Didn't know if I needed to worry about it.

And thanks for pointing out the going slow part - that's important. Nothing should be raised very quickly.

I think alk does get used up by some corals, but I'm not sure about that. Member Corailline could probably answer that for you though.

I am pretty sure having the proper level of Alk. will prevent pH swings, but if your pH has been fine and stable not sure I would worry to much about it. Please don't just take my word for it though I only read a few articles touching on the subject a few nights ago.
