Made a little progress today. Cleaned the sump and reactor/skimmer. Looks much better down there. Special thanks to ingtar_shinowa for suggesting shaking it up with some water before putting it in. Worked great and it's tumbling now and not making the reactors cloudy which is awesome.

Before picture (notice how dirty the reactors are)

More progress. I basted the rocks off a couple days in a row, and today siphoned the junk off the sand. Things are looking better - and the gfo is tumbling nicely in the reactor and not grinding to dust and escaping. Rinsing it off before putting it in really made a huge difference.

cyano free right now ;D got the new t12 bulbs up and running, finished my second dosing of microbe-lift, adjusted the powerheads a bit and lowered feeding. Seems to be working so far

(man, I need to stop spending my friday nights on 3reef) lol

So I started thinking about water temp today. It's always between 77-78 at night, and 79-80 during the day. I would like to improve on the 3 degree difference.

Anyway, this has been one of the coldest weeks of this winter here. Just noticed my tank dropped to 76.4 an hour ago (it was 79.6 at 5PM) Started doing some reading, and realized I made a noob mistake with my jager heater - I didn't calibrate it. Duh

I lost my birdsnest this week - figured my tank was just too young for sps. But the temp swings could have def been a stressor

You can calibrate a heater? I would have never of even thought about doing that. How do you do it?

On some heaters, such as the Jager you can, and have to.

Logan; if you are seeing big swings you can just up the temp to be closer to your high point for the day. For example if you max out at about 80* during the day, then just set the heater for 79*. You will reduce the swings dramatically.
