I dont think you'd crack it, but do it with a caution. Try to tighten it evenly to the glass, using proper tools. Do you think you chipped a bit when you drilled? Usually chips occur inside. Try to tighten it and see what happens over night. Either way, I was suggested not to use any silicone.
Also, can you turn the sump 180 degrees, so the drain from the display goes straight down and the return would go straight up, to minimize the headloss from the return pump?

I'd just plug the hole. Use PVC cement or some sort?

Sounds like you are having so much fun with the shopping spree! :) I have great experiences with Glass-holes and Marcorocks as well. Cant wait for more updates with pics. I love build threads!

thanks! i saved up for it and got started under budget, so i've been rolling with it :p

absolutely! lol. its the only thing i didn't clean because i wasn't sure if i was gonna replace it

Thank you!! Im hooked on build threads as well - very cool seeing them come along. As for the drains at an angle, I did it with the overflow because I thought it would make less noise than water falling straight down.

    Agreed!!

Little update today. Camera on my phone only works when it wants to - but I managed to get a couple pictures of the progress.

RO/DI unit is making water. Slowly but surely lol.

More salt than I needed.. but I got a good deal on it.

Marco sand 40 lbs and 20 lbs of live sand

Marco Rocks 50 lbs filled the tank nicely. I was worried it wouldn't be enough. I'll probably get a few pieces of live rock to finish off the scape and seed everything.

Really great rock and sand, couldn't be happier with these guys! Wish I could have got a picture of all the rocks out of the box. It was packaged really well with only a little rubble.

Also, I don't know if this is a good way to do it or not, but I put a piece of bubble wrap on top of the sand when I was putting water into the tank. I just poured the water onto it, seemed to help to not stir up the sand as much.

I poured the water onto the rocks so it would cascade down, but I like your idea with the bubble wrap. Good thinking on that one.

How much did that live sand cost you?

its working very well! I bought the refurbished ones that are currently on sale. This is my first RO/DI unit, so i can't compare it to anything. But it worked great out of the box and I didn't need to make any adjustments to it. Very simple to use.

I've read conflicting things about rinsing / not rinsing the dry aragonite sand from marco rocks. I decided to go ahead and rinse it using a paint strainer bag and RO water. The live sand I did not rinse. Both were about the same size and color.
