Well I must say, this thread is very helpful. I am just starting out as well and you have asked many of the questions I have been thinking. Great tank man!

Thank you - I'm glad to hear it!! I knew next to nothing 8 months ago and learned a lot off build threads - it's nice to know mine helped someone out too. Let me know if you start a thread I'll follow along for sure

The tank looks great. Seems like everybody's liking the new flow? Did you get the timers as well?

Thanks! I appreciated the advice the flow seems a lot better now. I took a video yesterday but no time to upload it yet.

No timers yet either - but I was thinking, is it worth giving up total flow (since I'd be losing about 1400gph when either side is turned off for the 30 minutes) to make the flow more random like this?

Right now with my return and 3 PH's I've got ~3100gph, or x42 turnover. Having half the flow from pumps off would bring me down to about 1700 or x22 turnover.

Maybe, depends on what you wanna keep. SPS loves random flow for growth. If it were me, I would just eat the cost and order a vortech:p Random flow, and high turn over.

Otherwise, snag another koralia and up the flow, and add the timers.

You would be fine I am sure with what you have, but my biggest beef with standard powerheads is you have absolutely no spread on the intake or out flow of water. This means you need more of them to cover the same area in regards to undertow of water and spread of water flow.

If you order another Koralia its gonna be ~40 bucks shipped plus timers ~20 bucks thats ~60 of the 350-500 you would need for a vortech and you will have a high resale value pump and something that will last, doing a great job the whole time. I don't wanna sound like a major fan boy here, but it is just my opinion based on doing both situations.

    +1!

I was trying to explain the same thing to someone the other day, only you said it WAY better. Koralias are still popular too, so you might be able to offset the cost a bit as well. :)

You know, you've got 20 gallons more than I, and when most people would say "What's 20 gallons?" Salt water alone weighs debatebly 8.5 pounds per gallon. That's roughly 170 pounds of water that needs to be circulated. I think, that if you feel the flow looks fine, you should leave it just where it is.
