The skimmer is a different story my friend, lol.

I got all these pieces in one big box, so wasn't really sure what went to what and how it hooked up. The pump for the skimmer was dead so I bought a new one, but the new one didn't have a hole for a tube to plug into for air.

So it was running, but only pumping water to the body of the skimmer and then back out the drains.

There were no bubbles because there was no air. So i took the nozzle piece of the old pump and replaced it on the new pump, plugged an air hose into the hole, and voila, i have bubbles now at least

Looks like somewhere down the road, you gonna have to get a decent skimmer to handle more bioload. Still, it's not something you have to do it right away.

How big is the chamber for the skimmer? I love my SWC Xtreme Cone Skimmer 160. Footprint is only 9"x7"

The first section is only about 6" wide so I'm kinda limited.. I could always build a new sump I'm still using the one I got with the set up. Might be a nice project over the long winter :p

Some new life in the tank as well. Got the crab and shrimp from my roommates tank. Went to the fish store planning on getting two small clowns, but I saw a pair of black/white ones and I really liked them. They were sold, so I'll have to wait til they order some next month. Got a two spot goby instead.

sweet thread bro, really nice set up, do you know about how long it takes to turn dead rock into live rock? i have a 90 gallon with about 85-90 lbs of LR, but it doesnt fill up much of the tank.

When the cycle/cure is done, I call the rocks live rocks since they hold enough beneficial bacteria on/in them. But I think talking about the color. If you keep the param (calcium, alkalinity and such) balanced and stable, you'll start to see purple/pink/red/green dots in weeks not months.

    Nothings ever easy!

So after nearly 3 weeks without a leak - my bulkhead is dripping from the back of the tank again :-/ Its only about a drop every hour or so - much slower than last time (page 5 of this thread) but it needs to be taken care of. My question is will my fish be okay if I drain the water about 7" so I can take apart the overflow box? It will probably be like this for a day or two - so my skimmer and sump will be offline too for this time. I only had 2 clowns and a goby, couple snails. I'll just have to move the heater to the DT.

On another frustrating note - I tightened the venturi key at the bottom of my skimmer last night and it started to leak as well! My roommate had an unused SeaClone skimmer I threw in my sump but I don't think its very high quality. I'm thinking while I have the sump offline to fix this leak - it might be a good time to re-build it and make room for a new skimmer in the first chamber.
