Fact is, most fish nibble on many different items in the wild because, just like us, they require a variety of nutrients that are not found in a single source. While there are a few that can adapt and thrive on one or two items, many will slowly die from malnutrition, sometimes taking 6 - 12 months, depending on the fish and what nutrient is missing from their diet. While soaking food in vitamins may help for some fish for a while, I still prefer the tried-and-true... feeding a variety. I could imagine that if I was restricted to hot dogs and potato chips supplemented with Geritol, the day would come when I could no longer choke it down. :D

Do I feed mussels and cockles from the grocery store? I found ocean nutrition sells frozen mussels and cockles but I can't find it in the USA.

I've decided to buy Just some rods food because of all the variety in it, it's perfect. I'll feed this along with occasional mysis shrimp and dried seaweed. Oh, and mussels occasionally. Sound okay?

I feed Ocean Nutrition Formula One and Prime Reef for the very same reason. While I have no personal experience with Rods Foods, I've only heard good things about it from those who do. Looks like a good plan to me. :)

    Cool thanks :)

And can I just buy a frozen bag of mussels to feed? Just defrost and serve? Lol

Yep. In fact, you could make your own blend from the grocery seafood counter. Just make sure everything is uncooked and unseasoned, and rinse well for added measure before chopping and mixing.

Maybe I'll try that, my mom would probably kill me for putting squid in the blender. If I can't, rods is probably just as good :) I'll make sure the mussels are uncooked and unseasoned.

But if I find a frozen bag of them, and they're cooked (which I think they most commonly are) I shouldn't feed? Only raw?

Exactly... ONLY raw. Seasonings, oils, etc commonly used in cooking seafood that appeals to the human palate is bad for fish (Not that great for us either, but we're much larger and a little bit better at digesting it). Furthermore, a lot of nutritional value is lost during the cooking process.

I agree in that I really do try to provide a variety to my fish. It actually makes me feel a little guilty because the dogs get the same dry food every day. They also get about 3 rawhide chews per day (little sticks). I try really hard not to give them human food because I think when one does that, it's hard to stop, they get fat and their health is more likely to decline. I do have to say that I feel bad sometimes that I give my fish such a varied diet and my dogs the pebble bowl :(

I should edit this post in that the whole thing changes as dogs get older and in their latter period of life. I believe then that they should be spoiled with a lot of different food :)
