    Hey everyone.

This is my favorite coral. It is one of my first I got when when I started my tanks last year. It has done awesome and has grown huge. I moved it to this tank with 440 watts of VHO lighting and it has loved it. I noticed that the flesh part on the branches below each head (polyp) has turned slightly tinted purple from the peach color it was before. I noticed what looked like a vein right where the sore is now. It was darker purple spot before the sore developed. I checked all my water parameters and they look good. My salinity I have been runnung at about .021-.022 which is lower that I had been keeping it. I have been keeping it low like this to see if it would help with some of the small outbreaks of ick that I still get occationally. The ick is pretty much gone now for the most part. I have moved some other corals into the tank..... Kenya tree, Colt and some starpolyps and some others but nothing is close to it ( well within 4 inches and then only a leather.

What caused this sore and will it get bigger? Anyone else experianced anything like this? Should I do a iodine dipp? I could move it back to my 30 gallon but I would rather keep it here.

    Jay,

I would not worry too much about the sore ( mark ) unless it gets bigger :) I actually wonder whether you may have placed the coral in a postion where the water movement is too high. Perhaps it is just an illusion ar a timing factor with the picture but normally the polyps ( tentacles ) of torch corals are much longer than what is shown in the photo. Anyway that's just my observation FWIW :)

Looks fine to me. Have you noticed any color shift in the tentacles or less expansion? Sometimes they'll look bad when you've got higher nutrients or just got rid of a bunch of nutrients (water change w/ carbon added afterwords, etc.).

Mine is not looking so hot right now due to a HUGE zoa die off problem (won't go into that, my mistake...killed 3/4 of a major amount of zoa's in my frag system). Every water change is making it look better.

FWIW, there's no difference for ich at 1.020 then 1.025. You really only get some reaction below 1.018. The hypo salinity method of removal is MUCH lower then that even.

No Gresham, this coral looks better everyday. I have close to 0 nutriants in this tank ( 0 nitrates). The polyp extention is HUGE and the color is light green/tan. Stunning coral really.I have been playing with the powerheads and I think I have found a winning combination. I read in one of my books that they like to have enough current to make their sweepers appear. I have 1 powerhead hitting the front glass at an angle and another in the top front left blowing accross the glass. Makes kindof a turbulent flow that comes from under the coral and blows up. I used to keep the current just enough to move the tenticles back and forth but it looks like they like a little more than that.

So you wouldnt worry about that sore on the bottom of the branch than I will just watch it. I just have never seen the flesh exposed before and I freaked out.

What is Zoa? Do I need this in my tank? Shoot I dont even have a refugium or sump yet.

This pic was taken after the lights were out for an hour and the coral had retreated for the evening. When its fully extended at noon the tenticles are about 4.5-5.5 inches with the sweepers going 8 or 9....mabey 9.
I have another that has changed from brown/tan to metalic green after I put her into this tank with my new VHO lights. Everyone seems happier in this tank with the DSB and low-nill nitrates.

Zoa = Zoanthids (polyps) and I see you probably have some...they are in your sig ;) :D
