Are you comfortable with a dslr? you can get a nikon d40, d3000, d60 or a nicer d90 for that price range. This will give you total control over the look, feel, intensity, contrast, brightness, focus of all your photos.

After using the family dslr made by Sony, I am looking into getting a nikon for myself.

Great shots FishGirl, and Jed, as well.

I really like the Nikon D40 & D3000 DSLRs. 50mm macro lens for the fish tank.

Shot with a D90 - no photoshop other than a simple blue balance correction in the third picture.

I'm in the same boat. I narrowed it to 2 models. Canon rebel xs and nikon d3000. Both $400-$500 depending where you look. I've decided on the nikon for two reasons. The grip feels better and the ccd sensor vs CMOS. Other than those differences, they are on a level playing field.

The main difference between the Cannon dslr and the Nikon is the lens. For myself I only use one or two lenses and like the feel of the Nikon. Nikon lenses are more expensive because the drive for the auto focus is inside the lens itself not in the body of the camera.8)
That d90 is the bomb but I think its out of his price range.
