I imagine what you're looking for isn't a quiet skimmer, but a skimmer on which you can use a pump that's quiet.

There really isn't a "silent" skimmer. As was already said, that is a relative term. For a 50g it will be small so not a big noise maker. Plus that small will not draw a lot of air so you won't have to worry about that too much.

At that size, regardless of what brand or design you buy, you will get the same choice of pumps. Aquabee, Atman, and maybe a small Bubble Blaster. Sicce driven skimmers will be a bit too big. So a Atman on a SWC or Octopus is going to sound the same. What you are looking for is all about the same.... generally quiet stuff cause they are small. At 50g you are not going to find a big difference as say you would buying a AquaC using a Mag pump versus a Bubbble King using a Red Dragon for a 120g.

If you have the money grab the deltec MCE 300 it out performs a other skimmers mentioned in this thread and it's very quiet. Cleaning is extremely simple and set up is plug and play.

Never used one but the C-Skim 1200 Deluxe Protein Skimmer looks nice, many features. If I need to replace my Kent which is not quiet I wall consider this one. There is a video of it running available at online stores.

thinking of going with the bubble king. if i can get it in my sump. aquacave is looking into if it will work for me. they also recommended the tunze 9005. i had the tunze 9005 on my 58 gallon. it wasnt quiet ...it had pump vibration noise. and i remember the bottom piece always falling off. but it did skim well
